“I represent South African Culture… this place is a lot of different things… blacks, whites, coloured, English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, wat ook al; I am all these different things all these different people fucked into one person” Ninja.
“De Zwarten” zei een huisgenootje. “Ik haat Blanke Zuid-Afrikanen, ze zijn allemaal zo racistisch!” Als ik het niet zo’n rotopmerking had gevonden had ik hard gelachen. Ze maakte zich schuldig aan dat wat ze zo verachtte. Eigenlijk was het een prachtige ‘de pot verwijt de ketel’ moment.
How do former activists reflect on the achievements of their struggle? It is now a generation after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War; a generation after the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of apartheid; a generation after the demise of the one-party state in most of Africa. In most cases, the outcome is not quite in line with the vision that inspired the people who helped to make it happen. How do people make sense of the processes that unfolded after they won their initial victory?
Nelson Mandela wordt internationaal gevierd als aanvoerder van het verzet tegen apartheid in Zuid-Afrika en als wereldwijd symbool van de strijd voor gerechtigheid en verzoening. Maar Mandela stond ook tientallen jaren lang te boek als terrorist. Pas in 2008, drie weken voor zijn 90ste verjaardag, werd Mandela geschrapt van de lijst met terrorismeverdachten aan wie de toegang tot de Verenigde Staten is ontzegd.
