Martin Büdel

Martin Büdel is M.A. student in African Studies at the African Studies Centre and Leiden University. After finishing secondary school in Germany in 2004 he spent about 15 months of voluntary work in a fair-trade project and as an English teacher in Mtwara/Tanzania. In order to learn more about social realities in African countries he did a B.A. in African Studies at the University of Bayreuth/Germany. Since then he was interested in the complex and versatile field of development practice in Africa as well as related policy and theory.

For his M.A. research he wants to focus on an NGO in Nairobi, the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). It combines football with development work in several fields such as health care, youth leadership or community development. Before departing to Kenya in August, Martin will visit the World Cup in South Africa and see matches of Group D with Germany, Ghana, Serbia and Australia and some more up to the semi-final. Beside that there will be time to explore South Africa and some projects related to football and development. He is interested in discourses about development in South Africa in connection to the World Cup and will share his experiences as a “fan“ in South Africa in his weblog on this site.
