World Cup fever....

Almost half of the matches are played, but the world cup fever in South Africa has been seriously challenged due to the 0-3 defeat against Uruguay in the second match of Bafana Bafana. Already before, you could not find many South Africans watching the matches of the other teams in one of the numerous public viewing opportunities. Also international fans are not as many as you would expect in the several fan parks and squares, where all the matches are showed on big screens. While South Africans hope for a miracle against France in their last group match in order to make it to the next round, also some of the favorite teams, such as Italy, Germany or Spain need to better their performance in order to go through the preliminary round.

Winter here in South Africa is maybe a major threat to fan’s mood for going out to see the matches at public viewings. Especially for the evening matches it is already too cold to stay outside, so most South Africans watch the matches at home and international fans can be found in bars and restaurants to enjoy their time there.

As the ability of South Africa to organize the big event was one of the major topics in media before the World Cup started, what I have seen so far, things go quite well. Around the matches in the stadia there is a well organized park and ride system and if you go to the stadium in time, there are no bigger problems you face. Only the stadium in Rustenburg was a bit difficult to approach so far and traffic jams before and after the match are a bit annoying for visitors. Beside the matches, South Africans welcome everyone very warmly and the whole atmosphere in the different cities is good. Hopefully it will not completely drop down, after Bafana Bafana leaving the tournament in the first round.
