A first impression
For about five weeks I will be in South Africa to witness the first football World Cup on African soil. The final (The Netherlands – Germany) I will be watching back in Leiden with my Dutch friends and they will hopefully protect me from being beaten up after Germany winning the World Cup.
Because I am not really that fanatic about football it is also fine for me if Germany (against expectation) will not reach the final. Nevertheless, I am really interested in football in Africa and will therefore follow the Ghanaian team for the next few weeks, watching their matches up to the last 16, where they will hopefully reach during their campaign.
I am looking forward to see great games and share some of the experiences during and surrounding the matches in this blog. Hopefully, the international football crowd will also carry the World Cup into the streets, as they did in 2006 in Germany and celebrate a big football party with the South Africans. At least, all the different flags of the participating teams are already represented on cars and you can buy them, and other fan equipment like jerseys or vuvuzelas, just everywhere.

FIFA and Sepp Blatter are no longer that popular in South African media, as they gain a lot of money out of the World Cup with little left for South Africa and the population itself. And voices that are not convinced of the promised big impact on the economy get stronger these days. FIFA also got some special guarantees from the South African government among them exemptions from paying taxes, another reason to make some people angry about FIFA policy referring the World Cup.
Most locals will not be able to see matches in the stadia, but as a fruit selling Mama in Soweto explained to me they will support their team “Bafana Bafana” to make them reach far. But, as she said, there is always one team winning and one has to loose, it is also fine if the South African team will not win the Cup.

Why is it that lots of people
Why is it that lots of people do not think that trophy can.... and is indeed going to....... remain on the african continent, not because its the venue but i think there is history in the making and my feeling is that its going to be real history. As for Martin its a good thing to have a nap and while at it you may dream of a Netherlands vs Germany Final... Good Luck
Well, I think you need your
Well, I think you need your humor detector while reading that first paragraph ;)
But everyone would like their own country to reach the finals, of course...
As for making history, the fact that it's the first world cup on the African continent will make sure of that, whatever the outcome.
Daardie rooi kaart was so te sê die laaste strooi.
